ABOUT THE BOOK

Collected history on Douglass High School before segregation ended.

The curated historical records collected in Looking Back at Douglass High School and Our Notable Educators gives glimpses of school year histories for what began as Tabor City Negro School in 1915 and later became Douglass High School, an all Black school. School year records began with the 1938-1939 school year.

This book was created as a tribute to this school and to its educators that affected the Black community of Tabor City, Columbus County, North Carolina and in honor of all its graduates. Information was collected from digital records, old documents, and classmates to create glimpses into school and student school year achievements. From humble beginnings through the completion of school consolidation in 1969-70 following the enactment of the Civil Rights act of 1964, Douglass High School was deeply embedded in its community, and roots in the form of its proud alumni are now spread coast to coast.
